Childbirth Education Classes

Pre-Registration and payment is required for the following childbirth classes along with a registration form:

The Works Family Health & Fitness Center in Somersworth, NH also offers new mom exercise classes
such as Prenatal Aquatic Exercise and Mommy & Me Exercise.

The following classes are held at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover:

Prepared Childbirth Series 


This class includes traditional childbirth education, including an overview of labor, birth, medications, potential complications and postpartum care. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class. Classes meet one night a week for 5 weeks from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $110/per couple. Upcoming dates for 2015: Wednesdays Jan 7th - Feb. 2nd and Mondays Feb. 16th - March 16th



Celebrating Pregnancy


This 2-day class is for mothers and couples who are interested in a deeper exploration of childbirth preparation. The class focuses on natural ways to cope with pain and fear. Participants learn several relaxation techniques. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included. The class meets Mondays from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $50/per couple. 2015 dates to come!
Weekend Prepared Childbirth Class 


This 2-day class has been designed as an alternative to the 5-week series, offering the same information. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class. Class is held Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Cost is $145/per couple.  Upcoming dates are: Dec. 13th & 14th; January 10th & 11th and February 7 &8. 
One-Day Childbirth Class Top
This one day class provides you with the same information you would receive in the two-day weekend class (listed above). A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included. Cost is $145. This class is offered the following Saturdays from 9 - 4 p.m. December 21st; January 31st and March 28th.
HypnoBirthing Class


In this 5-week series, you will learn a relaxation technique to help you maintain an atmosphere of calm and relaxation during birth. This class will guide you through the philosophy and techniques of normal, gentle birthing.  Partners will learn effective tools in assisting the birthing mother. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class.  Cost is $145/per couple, which includes materials.  Upcoming Dates:  The weekend of December 6 & 7 both Saturday& Sunday 9:30 - 1:30.  * this is an unusual format due to holiday schedule.  2015 Dates: Thursdays January 15th - February 12th.

It takes a Village.. Preparing with your Partner for Babys Arrival


Communication and coordination are important aspects of a couples relationship when becoming new parents.  This workshop will help you gain perspective on your strengths and priorities as a couple and become aware of the resources available throughout your journey.   You'll leave with improved skills for dealing with stress and the many changes as you transition from couple to parents.  Cost is $50 per couple.  2015 Dates to come

Setting Healthy Expectations When You're Expecting  Top

In the transiiton to motherhood we sometimes make the mistake of setting unhealthy expectations for ourselves, our partners, our labor process, and even our babies.  This workshop for women will help you to increase your awareness of current expectations towards having a baby.  You'll walk away with a greater sense of how your thoughts can impact the experience of becoming a mother, the resources available to you throughout this journey and a new set of skills for dealing with the changes that occur after birth.  Cost is $50.00.  2015 Dates to come

Prenatal Yoga


This 4-week series is offered to you at any stage of your pregnancy and at any level of practice. Come and experience a deeper connection to your baby and sense of well-being. Yoga will help you prepare to give birth in an active and intuitive way, stretch and tone your body for an easier delivery and faster recovery. Learn to use the whole breath to relax and release fears for a gentler transition into motherhood. Taught by our Women & Children's Center nurses trained at Kirpalu in prenatal yoga. Wear comfortable clothing. Class is offered Mondays from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. Cost is $50/per mom-to-be.  Tuesdays February 3rd - 24th.
Breastfeeding Class


This class is intended for women who are planning on breastfeeding or are considering breastfeeding. Lactation consultants will discuss the advantages of breastfeeding, how to get started and stay breastfeeding, how to continue breastfeeding once returning to work and much more! Partners are strongly encouraged to attend also. Classes are offered once a month on a Tuesday from 6 - 8:30 p.m. Cost is $10. Upcoming dates are: December 16th; January 13th and February 10th
Birth Center Tour


Please note that a tour of the Women & Children's Center is given during all childbirth classes. Tours are scheduled for people not attending classes once a month on a Tuesday at 7PM and once a month on Saturdays at 1:30PM.  Tuesday dates are as follows:  Dec. 2nd; Jan. 6th; and Feb. 3rd   Saturday dates are as follows: Nov. 8th; December 13th January 10th and February 7th.


Happiest Baby on the Block and Newborn Care


Happiest Baby on the Block will teach parents and caregivers simple techniques to help babies sleep longer and stay calmer. Learn how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes! Additional topics include aspects of newborn care such as diapering, bathing and umbilical cord care. Hands-on practice is encouraged. Parents will also learn about newborn development and newborn capabilities within the first few months of life. Cost is $35 and includes the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. Classes offered evenings or Saturday mornings. Evening classes are 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. December  9th & February 17th.  Saturday classes are 9 - 11 a.m. November 15th and January 24th

Cesarean Delivery Class


This class is intended for those expecting to have a Cesarean birth (C-section). We will discuss what to expect when you arrive at the Women & Children's Center and the process of preparing you for your birth. A tour of the Center is included. Class is offered Mondays from 7 - 8 p.m. No charge.   February 9th, May 11th, August 17th and October 19th 2015


Car Seat Safety Checks    Top

In collaboration with the Dover Police Department, we offer all parents an opportunity to see that their car seats are installed safely. A certified technician will be available from 4 - 6:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays:  November 12th.  Private appointments are arranged by calling (603) 740-2867.


Sibling Class


Brothers- and sisters-to-be will learn about how the new baby will be born and talk about what it will be like to be a big brother or sister. This free class is intended for children ages 3 and older. Classes are offered from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Upcoming dates:  December 3rd; January 7th  and February 4th ~ Please bring an infant photo of your child.

Grandparents Class


This class is designed to help grandparents understand the changes in childbirth today and ways to support the new parents. A tour of the Women & Children's Center is included in this class which is offered at no Charge. This class is offered one saturday every other month from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Upcoming dates include: January 17th
Siblings at Birth


This class is for big brothers and sisters who will be present during the birth of their new baby! Children will learn about the hospital equipment they will see, the stages of labor and how they can help and what the new baby will look like during the delivery. Families will watch a movie and tour the Women & Children's Center. We work with each family to share this information in the way they are most comfortable.

Babysitting Course Top
The Education/Organizational Development Department offers a babysitting course for 11 - 14 year-olds. Class is offered one Saturday per month from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. to review various babysitting responsibilities and basic first aid. Cost is $30. Please call (603) 740-2858 to register.

New Parent Support Group


Come and meet other new parents and discuss topics of concern to you. Facilitated by lactation consultants and child life specialists. Held every Monday, EXCEPT for holidays, from 1:30 - 3 p.m. No registration necessary for this class.


 Infant Massage


This class in intended for moms and dads, or caretakers, interested in learning how to communicate love and respect through nurturing touch of infant massage. Cost is $25.  Recommended for infants 0-3 months.  Please call 740-2867 if you are interested in this class.
